Abstract
The proximal femur is one of the most common sites where benign bone tumors occur. Benign bone tumors of the proximal femur usually weaken the supporting framework and can affect normal anatomical structure and function. Forty-five patients who underwent surgical treatment for benign tumor of the femur were reviewed. The diagnoses were fibrous dysplasia in 25 patients, osteoid osteoma in 9, aneurysmal bone cyst in 5, solitary bone cyst in 4, and giant cell tumor in 2. The average follow up period was 52 months, ranging 7 months to 9 years. The standard treatment was curettage and bone graft. We analyzed the treatment modalities, the functional results and recurrence. Postoperative results were analysed by the value for pain which was based on the ISOLS¢¥s evaluation system. Postoperatively, 17 patients reported no pain, 15 had intermediate pain, one felt modest/intenlittently disabling pain, and one had moderate/disabling pain. In one patient, intraoperative fracture happened and internal fixation was done. Local recurrence occurred in three patients and additional operations were performed. No other complications occurred. Recently, we treated some cases with a ¡°burr technique¡±, which is making small window on the lateral side of the femoral bone, and performing curettage with burr. This technique shortened recovery time due to minimal intervention. Curettage and bone graft resulted in satisfactory clinical and functional outcomes.
